One of the most memorable moments during my time as a Counselor in Training (CIT) at Tenafly Nature Center happened every time we passed by the bird exhibit. Without fail, the young children would light up, their excitement bubbling over as they eagerly called out, “Minae! Minae!” Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it never ceased to amaze me how they could greet the birds with the same joy every single time.

I had the privilege of working closely with the children as a CIT and witnessing their growing love for nature. Our time together involved guiding them through lesson plans, arts and crafts, and games, all aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment. Each week, we focused on different topics, such as the importance of water and understanding nature’s resources. Whether we were planting seeds, meeting animals, or exploring forest trails, every activity aimed to instill in them a sense of wonder and respect for the world around us. Inspiring and nurturing this love for nature in young children is crucial, especially in light of the challenges of climate change. By instilling a sense of wonder and responsibility towards the environment, we help ensure that they not only understand the importance of caring for it, but also feel a personal commitment to protecting it. It’s essential that they see nature not just as a resource, but as something beautiful and worth preserving. Watching their curiosity bloom as they learned about the natural world was incredibly rewarding. It was more than just teaching them facts about nature; it was about helping them form a personal connection with it. Through our time together, I saw firsthand how these experiences can shape the way children view and care for the environment. And at the end of each week, it was always heartwarming to see their excitement to return, already asking what new adventure awaited them the following Monday..
